MUSIC MINISTRY Lisa Lewis has served as Minister of Music at St. Luke's since May, 1984 and has developed an excellent choir made of talented members of the parish. The position of Music Minister became a full-time position in January 2008 and we are very excited about the growth in this program. Music plays a vital role in the liturgy at St. Luke's and we are fortunate indeed to have such a diverse program. We offer musical opportunities ranging from a traditional chancel choir to a contemporary praise band "Reflections". Several years ago we started a Celtic Band made up of talented high school string players, guitars and recorders. We currently have an Angel Choir for training children's voices for ages 5 and up. The Chancel Choir The Chancel Choir sings for the 11:00 service during the school year and the 10:00 service during the summer months. The Choir sang with great success at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. for "Kentucky Day" in May, 2006. The Vivaldi "Gloria" was presented with orchestra for the pre-service concert Midnight Mass Christmas Eve 2007 and brass, timpani and choir was featured at the Easter services. The Choir will be featured at the diocesan service of Baptism and Confirmation at which the Presiding Bishop will preside. Starting May 17, the Summer Family Choir begins. We rehearse at 9:15 a.m. for the 10:00 a.m. service. This is a great time for people of all ages to join the music program in this casual and informal service. The Choir rehearses in the Choir Room in the Undercroft on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. during the school year, and at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings during the summer. Celtic Band This talented group of young musicians plays at special events throughout the year at St. Luke's and was recently featured at Ditto's Restaurant for St. Patrick's Day celebrations. The string players were also the foundation of the orchestra for the Vivaldi "Gloria" performed on Christmas Eve 2007. The Band plays traditional Irish and Scottish tunes, entertaining parishioners at picnics and receptions. The Band was chosen to play at the Diocesan Service held at All Saints Camp at during the Presiding Bishop's visit. We're lucky to have a resident bagpiper, Marleen Bailie, who plays at special services. Rehearsals are held on Saturdays as arranged by the director. The Angel Choir The Angel Choir is a training choir for young children ages 5 and up. Children learn how to sing while having fun with innovative teaching techniques. They sing at the 9:00 Eucharist during the school year and occasionally during the summer service at 10:00 a.m. We will continue the fun and games throughout the summer months. Rehearsals are held in the Choir Room in the Undercroft on Wednesdays from 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. |
